Ghoncheh Ghavami, a British-Iranian woman is jailed for watching a men's volleyball game in Iran
A British-Iranian woman, Ghoncheh Ghavami has been jailed in Iran for watching a men’s volleyball game
The
activist was first arrested in June while she tried attending a match
with a group of women but was later released before this recent arrest
Disclosure by the 25 year-old woman’s lawyer who spoke to BBC, tells she was held after been "guilty of spreading anti-regime propaganda."
Iran,
an extremist Islamic nation banned the act of women watching men
volleyball in 2012, an extension to the same rule applied in football
According to Iran’s chief of police, Gen Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam, women are banned from Iranian football matches because it is ‘’not yet in the public interest' for them to share the stands with men."
Already, Amnesty International is following the jailing, reporting that ''It's
an outrage that a young woman is being locked up simply for peacefully
having her say about how women are discriminated against in Iran.
''The
authorities should investigate allegations that Ghoncheh was subjected
to death threats by her interrogators and provide compensation for her
arbitrary detention and her prolonged solitary confinement,’’ Eurosport quoted the international human rights agency
