Lawmakers, workers, flee over National Assembly bomb scare

There was a bomb scare this afternoon at the National Assembly, which had lawmakers, Assembly staff, and bank workers in the premises all closing abruptly and hurriedly leaving the premises.

The bomb scare which happened at about 2pm today according to reports, started when security operatives attached to the National Assembly acted on complains by some legislative aides and workers about some suspicious movement by some individuals with questionable character in the premises. The security men immediately drafted men of the Police and Nigeria Civil Defence Corp to the entrance of the complex. This action fueled fears of a possible attack. Continue...

Absolut Partners MTV for MAMAs 2014

According to reports, 103 girls were kidnapped after an attack on a Girls Secondary School located in Chibok, a town on the border of Adamawa and Borno state last night April 14th.

Gunmen reportedly arrived at the school in Chibok around 9pm, killed the soldier stationed to protect the students and took 103 out of the 250 girls that make up the school. The men took the girls away in four lorries. BBC Africa reports that the number of girls abducted is as high as 200.

At least 1,600 people have been killed in attacks since January 2014, with 80+ killed only yesterday at Nyanya motor park in Abuja. IK thinks it's time Nigerians start praying for Nigeria. How Faith Sakwe became President Jonathan's adopted child

In recent weeks, we got to meet one of President Jonathan's adopted kids (He has quite a few) Faith Osakwe, who married her heartthrob Osim Edwards this past weekend in Abuja.

Facts have emerged on how the President and his wife First Lady Patience Jonathan adopted Faith and her siblings in 2000.

According to reports, Faith is the daughter of Late Engr. Ukalizibe Sakwe, a Chieftain of the People Democratic Party in Bayelsa state and also a bosom friend of the Jonathans, who died in a fatal motor accident in 2000. After his death, President Jonathan and the first lady adopted his 4 children; Faith, Arewera Adolphus, Aruabai and Abayola and took responsibility of their welfare & education over the last 14 years.

'I am the king of R&B in Nigeria' - Darey Art Alade declares

Award winning artiste Darey Art Alade said in a recent interview with Encomium mag that he is the king of RnB music in Nigeria and not Banky W. When asked if he feels any competition between himself and Banky W knowing that they are both called Nigeria's king of RnB, Darey replied;

"There is only one king of RnB. I have never heard anybody being called king of RnB except me. I have never heard anybody call him (Banky W) king of RnB except if you think he is one. But the truth is, there is only one king, and you know who the king is. If you doubt it, my new material will settle the scores. Although it has taken sometime, I am very happy the work is coming out soon" he told the magazine

On artiste/management face off, Darey said;

"The truth of the matter is everybody has a role to play and they have a portion of the blame. The label invests something, I don't want to say much. For every investment you want to make a return. This is where the artiste doesn't understand. In the beginning, they gave you a house, a car, and you think you are talented, and come to think of it, you don't even have anything in the market. Whatever they gave you was based on potential, the initial agreement that if I give you this, you will give me that in return. Some artistes don't have agreement, everything is sealed at a bar. As you drink, you signed without realizing what you are signing. Some of them are illiterates, some pretend to know what the business is all about, but they don't. Some of them get carried away by the glitz and glamour of it, signed without knowing what the agreement stipulates. When they default, they start blaming the label, saying all sorts of things. But most of us don't find out what was the agreement before going to the press and write. On the other side, the label may have been obligated to do certain things but they did not do it and the artiste will complain. These are the issues" he said

On how to resolve these issues, Darey said;

"I think both sides should have respect for agreement. There shouldn't be issues if both sides respect agreement they made. For instance, when I left Questionmark, nobody heard that I fought anybody till tomorrow. Yes we had disagreement, it wasn't a rosy ending but till date they are still my friends, we work together. So maturity is needed to handle such situation".

Darey also spoke on his plans to own a radio station

"I will love to own a radio station. I have already started making inquiries and plans on that feasibility. I am a radio person, I have worked on radio, and it was really fun. Since then I felt it is good if I can achieve this by running a radio station. After all, it will provide jobs for people, encourage creativity and improve entertainment. I don't know the format of the station yet but let me get the license first" he said.

Again...Monalisa Chinda and Lanre Nzeribe part ways

In an interview with Punch in February 2014, Monalisa Chinda described her boyfriend of two years as 'just a friend'. Some of us found it odd at the time but what we didn't know was that the off/on couple had parted ways...again.

How we entertainers helped politicians kill our fans in Nyanya - by Etcetera

Singer Etcetera thinks Nigerian entertainers are partly to be blamed for what happened at Nyanya Motor Park yesterday. Find his opinion piece below...

For God's sake, can Somebody please call Dbanj, Don Jazzy, Onyeka Onwenu, Duncan Mighty, Stephanie Okereke, Genevieve Nnaji, Funke Akindele, Omotola, Rita Dominic, Aki and Pawpaw, Sammy Okposo, Sunny Neji, Maleke, Okey Bakassi, Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Daddy Showkey, Richard Mofe Damijo, Kwam 1 and other entertainers that have at one time or the other been seen dining with politicians? Can you please tell them that there has been a bomb blast in Nyanya? Can you include pictures of the mutilated bodies? Please don't forget to tell them that most of the dead might have been lovers of their music and movies and cheered them in every concert and football matches they played both at club level and the national team. Tell them that their CDs and Movies were bought by those dead fans for inspiration and because they wanted to feel alive and ease off the daily tensions faced everyday in this country.

That the Jingles done by Dbanj, Don Jazzy, Sammy Okposo, Onyeka Onwenu and other entertainers might have convinced some of those who have died in different Boko Haram raids or bad roads or lack of proper healthcare facilities to vote for politicians who have failed them in all ramifications? The same politicians that failed to protect the lives of those shredded bodies in Nyanya? That some of the dead fans in Nyanya might have even spent their little earnings to attend their concerts in Abuja and environs? Have you as an entertainer ever sat down to reflect on the fact that each time we give our voices to enhance the career of these politicians knowing they mean no good for this country that we are bringing more hardship and even death to our fans?

Why devote precious hours in the studio composing songs asking your fans to vote for politicians whose past stinks more than the dustbin at Ojota?

How do you feel listening to those songs today knowing that Mr Politician failed you and your die-hard fans? Can you give back those millions to bring back the lives of those dead fans in Nyanya, Jos, Maiduguri, Agatu in Benue? I guess not, because frolicking with the devil makes u perpetually his.

2015 is around the corner. Many of us entertainers will be called upon to do jingles, attend rallies wearing branded T-shirts in support of these same politicians. Millions of naira will be paid to your bank accounts. Thousands of bottles of MOET will be popped for you to feel good at different rally points while you convince your fans to join the bandwagon as part of the special few who voted for change.

Right now, some of us entertainers must be licking our lips in anticipation of the naira windfall come 2015. Let your conscience be your pilot. That is if you have one. May the souls of those fans who have died because of insecurity and corruption haunt every entertainer who refuses to repent from selling his or her talent for money at the expense of a better Nigeria.

And may the souls of all our faithfully departed fans REST IN PEACE. Amen!

Police arrest twins for robbery, burglary

A set of twins, Taiye and Kehinde Balogun, (pictured above) have been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Lagos for robbing a factory belonging to Reckitt Benckiser, Punch reports.

Police authorities said the brothers, who were welders, were hired by a robbery gang to break into the company's warehouse in May last year. The robbery gang robbed the company of soap, noodles and chemicals worth N17million.

They were arrested, after much investigation, in February 2014. How sad for their parents. Continue.

After their arrest, the 27 year old twins claimed that they were not aware that they were being hired for a robbery operation.

Kehinde said;

“Around May last year, we were called by one guy known as Yankee who lives near our workshop in Agbara. He took us to meet one Deji. Deji claimed to be a storekeeper at the factory, saying he had misplaced his key. He took us to the warehouse and said we should break the locks open. After breaking the locks, they told us to help them load the chemicals into some trucks. They said they were under instructions to transfer the cartons to another warehouse. After helping them load the goods, we were given N10,000 each.”

But the police do not believe their story. They insist that the twins were aware that it was a robbery operation. Plus other suspects arrested along with the twins said the twins had been informed of the operation beforehand.

The headquarters of the PDP, Wadata House in Wuse Zone 2 Abuja was gutted by fire around 8.15 last night. A section of the building, which the party uses as its press center, was completely razed.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisah Metuh, confirmed the incident and said it was not sabotage, but electrical fault. He said the fire started from an air-conditioning unit in one of the cabins and had been put under control by men of the Federal Fire Service.

“The PDP rules out any form of sabotage or attack and hereby wishes to inform all our members and teeming supporters that the fire has since been put under control,’’ Metuh said in a short statement.

Oscar Pistorius left the witness box in tears twice today during a fierce line of questioning from the state prosecutor who accused him of doctoring his testimony to fit evidence at the scene.

'You're not using your emotional state as an escape are you?' Mr Nel said

Mr Nel also tried to pin Pistorius on whether he intended to shoot at the intruder, stating that he did not fire a warning shot. He alleged the runner changed his aim with his 9mm pistol to ensure that he hit Reeva Steenkamp as she fell back against a magazine rack after the first shot. Pistorius said he fired four times through the closed toilet door in his home last year after hearing a 'wood' sound that he mistook for the door being opened by an intruder who was about to attack him.
The athlete said that, in retrospect, the noise he probably heard was the magazine holder being moved by his girlfriend.

Mr Nel said Pistorius killed Miss Steenkamp intentionally after a fight and is lying about fearing an intruder.

He said Pistorius heard Miss Steenkamp, struck by the first shot, fall against the magazine rack and that he used that sound to adjust his aim.
'I'm saying you heard the magazine rack and you changed your aim,' Mr Nel said to the Paralympic champion.
'I wouldn't have heard anyone fall inside of the toilet while I was shooting,' Pistorius replied to Mr Nel, though directing his gaze to Judge Thokozile Masipa, who will decide on the verdict.

Pistorius said he searched desperately for Miss Steenkamp in the dark bedroom after the shooting, feeling across the bed, on the floor next to it and behind a curtain before realising it might have been her in the toilet.

Mr Nel asked Pistorius why he did not turn on the lights and also check to see if the bedroom door was open and if Miss Steenkamp had fled that way as gunshots had been fired.
'It's one of the things that make your version unbelievable,' Mr Nel said.

Earlier, Pistorius broke down after being asked to repeat what he said as he moved towards the bathroom where he shot Reeva Steenkamp after hearing a noise he thought was a burglar.
'I screamed "get the f*** out of my house",' he wailed in a high-pitched voice. Mr Nel alleged that Pistorius shouted the same words at Miss Steenkamp during a row.

Pistorius wept uncontrollably, prompting the judge to adjourn the hearing to allow him to compose himself.

After the judge left the courtroom, Pistorius stood sobbing with his body trembling and turned away from the gallery.

Mr Nel also tried to pin Pistorius on whether he intended to shoot at the intruder, but the 27-year-old said he did not intend to do so and that he was terrified at the time.

'I didn't have time to think about what I wanted to do,' Pistorius said.
That prompted Mr Nel to question whether Pistorius was changing his legal strategy from 'self-defence' to 'involuntary action'.

He later said Pistorius did not fire a warning shot.
Pistorius said that when he shot he had no idea who was behind the door, in response to Mr Nel's remark that he did not know whether a child, an unarmed burglar or more than one person could have been in the toilet.
'You never gave them a chance, in your version,' Mr Nel said, building the prosecution case that Pistorius shot to kill.

Proceedings were halted on another occasion when he wept while denying that he intentionally shot his girlfriend.

When pressed to state what his defence was, Pistorius said: 'I heard the noise and I did not have time to interpret it and fired out of fear.
Mr Nel replied: 'You know exactly what you were doing, you fired at Reeva. You fired at her.'
Fighting back tears, Pistorius cried out 'I did not fire at Reeva' - forcing the judge adjourn the hearing.

When he returned to the stand, Mr Nel accused Pistorius of crying not out of grief for his girlfriend, but because he was getting his testimony confused.

'I'm going to argue that you got emotional because you got your defences mixed up,' Mr Nel claimed, saying the Olympian he had changed his account from one of self-defence to involuntary action.
Mr Nel said the only explanation for why Miss Steenkamp was standing up against the door when she was shot was because she had been running away from Pistorius.

'All the screams and shouts were at her,' Mr Nel said. 'She fled for her life'.
The prosecution has said Pistorius's account of a mistaken shooting is a lie.
Earlier, Mr Nel told the court: 'Today, I'm going to prove your version of events is untrue. That you tailored your version, concocted your story.

'Your version is so improbable that it cannot reasonably possibly be true.'

He went on to claim that Pistorius had argued with Miss Steenkamp shortly before the shooting.
'It's the state's case, Mr Pistorius, that she wanted to leave and that you weren't sleeping, you were both awake,' said Mr Nel.
'That's not correct my lady, that's untrue,' Pistorius replied softly.
'There was an argument,' Mr Nel said, drawing another denial.

The prosecutor's relentless questioning has elicited tears and taut replies from the world-famous double amputee, who insists he and the 29-year-old model were in a loving relationship.
Mr Nel also complained that Pistorius was being evasive and challenged him: 'Today I pick up you're not sure about things, is anything wrong?' Nel asked. 'You're fine?'
Pistorius grew increasingly restless during the morning, wiping his face, pinching the bridge of his nose and clenching his jaw.

Later, Mr Nel accused Pistorius of being a stickler for detail on some matters, in contrast to his frequent statements in court that he could not remember aspects of his evidence.
Mr Nel noted that Pistorius earlier said he warned Ms Steenkamp to call police about an intruder in a whisper, contradicting later evidence that he spoke in a 'low tone'.

The prosecutor also said blood spatter evidence indicated that the athlete's statement about the location of a duvet in the bedroom was false.
Pistorius has said the duvet was on the bed and that police photographs of the bed cover on the floor suggest that police moved it there after the shooting.
Mr Nel said a pattern of blood drops on the duvet and on the carpet nearby show that it was on the floor before police arrived, and that its location amounts to evidence that the couple had been having an argument.

The prosecutor also alleged that Miss Steenkamp was in the process of getting dressed in the midst of the night-time argument and wanted to leave Pistorius's house shortly before the shooting.

A pair of jeans strewn on the bedroom floor showed Miss Steenkamp was putting them on, Mr Nel said, and contrasted with her character as a neat person who would not leave clothes lying around.
Pistorius responded that Miss Steenkamp was neat, but he said the jeans were inside out and therefore showed that Miss Steenkamp had not been in the process of donning them.

Mr Nel also questioned why the athlete did not give fuller details of his account in his bail statement last February, days after he killed Miss Steenkamp.

Pistorius had said then that there was a noise from the bathroom that caused him to think that people had broken into his house, but did not explain until later that it was the bathroom window sliding across and slamming against the frame.

The athlete said on Monday that he was on medication and traumatised while in a jail cell at the time of his bail statement, which could account for any discrepancies with his later evidence.
Mr Nel also said it was improbable that, in Pistorius's story, Miss Steenkamp did not ask him why he was getting out of bed in the middle of the night to retrieve fans from the edge of the balcony.

14year-old child-bride charged with killing husband, 3 others in Kano

Wasila Tasi’u, the 14 year old bride who killed her 35 year husband Umar Sani, and three others in Kademi village in Gaya Local Government Area in Kano has been charged with murder.

She was charged today April 14th before a Rijiyar Zaki Magistrates Court in Kano for alleged culpable homicide.

The prosecutor, Inspector Yusuf Sale, while testifying before the Magistrate, Binta Muhammad, said the accused killed her husband and three others with food mixed with local rat poison. Sale said her husband and the three others died on the spot while six others who ate the meal fell ill immediately and were rushed to General Hospital Gaya, but were later treated and discharged.

The girl however pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison on the order of Magistrate Binta.

EFCC Press Release: Seven undergraduates arrested in Lekki raid

A surprise dawn raid on two houses in the Lekki area of Lagos on April 6, yielded the arrest of seven suspects, all undergraduates studying various courses in some of the nation’s tertiary institutions.

The undergraduates, who are within the age-range of 21 and 29 years, include Elete Fred Debi, a 500-level student of Physics/Production Technology of the University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. Others are: Ese Iriruaga, 300-level student of Geology, Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State; Couson Jimmy, 300-level student of Computer Science, Benson Idahosa, University, Benin-City, Edo State; Anthony Onos, 200-level student of Political Science, Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos State; Omene Stephen, 200l student of Computer Science, University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State; Kome Emmanuel, 200l student of Petroleum Engineering, University of Port-Harcourt and Shola Muyiwa of the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State.

They were picked in two houses at Lekki County Homes and Lekki Phase One, both in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State following an intelligence report on their alleged involvement in sundry internet scams.

The suspects have all made useful statements. One of them, Shola Muyiwa, confessed that, he recently collected $100 from one of his victims, Dora Hunt, based in North Carolina, United States of America.

Various items were recovered from the suspects such as laptop computers, expensive phones, Ipads and exotic cars, including a Range Rover Evogue; Honda Crosstour , Mercedeze Benz C 300 4matic, S 300 Mercedes Benz and Acura ZDX SUV.

The suspects will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded.

Man burns girlfriend to death after she leaves him for his own son

A jealous father-of-twelve who burned his 24-year-old lover to death when she tried to leave him for his 18-year-old son has been jailed for life, UK Daily Mail reports.

Ashley Williams, 49, hit Julie Beattie, 24, over the head with a hammer before he doused her in a mixture of petrol and diesel fuel.

She managed to stagger out of her home in flames like a ‘zombie' and gasp: ‘Ashley did this to me', before collapsing. She later died of horrific injuries.

Two children aged four and five witnessed the murder and became the youngest witnesses to give evidence at a murder trial. Continue...

Her sister Lucie Beattie described arriving at their south London home to see Williams put on his coat and walk out as Ms Beattie burned, screaming, behind him.

He carried out the attack in revenge because the mother of his four children was packing her bags to live with his son Ashley jnr from a previous marriage.

He claimed that he had thought he was involved in a 'water fight' and that she had been throwing the fuel at him - but he had no idea how she actually became ignited.

But he was convicted of murder at the Old Bailey by a jury of six men and six women.
He showed no emotion as the verdict was announced while the victim’s family wept and clutched each other’s hands. He was jailed for life and told he must serve minimum of 25 years before being considered for release.

Williams was married to Monica Williams and the couple had eight children together before they divorced in 1999.

He then started a relationship with Linda Beattie, the victim’s mother, before he moved on to Julie.

Ms Beattie was aged only 16 when she gave birth to their first child in 2009.
The court heard that Williams became increasingly possessive and would not let his partner have a tattoo or wear revealing clothes.

Ashley Jnr, 18, moved into the flat in Walworth, in September 2012 and began a sexual relationship with his father's girlfriend four or five months later, it was said

When Williams found out, he banned his son from having anything to do with Ms Beattie and tried to exile him from London. He threatened to ‘break every bone in his body’ if he refused to leave town.

On July 18 Ms Beattie and Ashley Jnr travelled to Birmingham together.

The couple had come back to London on the day of her murder, the same day Williams had sent a number of texts, begging Ms Beattie for forgiveness.
In one message he said: ‘I tried over and over with you Julie.
‘I wish you nothing but the best... I’ll always love you, I just showed it too late, please forgive me Julie.’
He also sent his children bizarre messages blaming them for the break up of the relationship.
In one he stated: ‘When my life is done..mark these words of your father, my curse will begin.'

When Williams came home from work at 11am he locked her inside the house.
Her sister Lucie Beattie collapsed in court as she relived the moment she saw her sister emerge from the house in flames.
She said when she went to the house Ms Beattie screamed: ‘He’s going to kill us.’
When she returned minutes later she saw smoke billowing out of a window and ran in screaming: ‘Where’s Julie.’
She sobbed as she told the court: ‘I pushed open the kitchen door and a lot of smoke came out.
‘I saw Julie. She was in flames,’ she wept.
The victim walked out of the house and rolled onto the floor before sitting down with her hands and legs out in front of her.
Witnesses said that her clothing and some of her skin was actually on fire.
Neighbours poured water on the victim and wrapped her in wet blankets while they waited for emergency services.
Williams was arrested in a park close to the home later the same day, with self inflicted injuries.
In court he claimed he was not trying to kill himself because of what had happened to the victim - but because he was upset that the fire had damaged the kitchen. Williams, of Walworth, who had denied the charge, was convicted of murder.

Jehovah’s Witness Church members decry marriage restriction

Some members of Jehovah's Witness have come out to condemn their church's stance against them marrying outside their faith. According to Jehovah's Witness' doctrine, members of the church are to only marry themselves and not from any other Christian faith. If they do, it's seen as an act of immorality. And people who marry outside the church are usually expelled from the church and treated as non-members.

The members say this has kept them unmarried for years and in some cases, get married to members who they are not attracted to. Continue...

Confirming the church's position to PM News, an elder in the church, Elder James Etop, says the church's position is in accordance with biblical instructions. He said that if members are allowed to marry anyhow their faith would be affected. He said the teachings from other churches are different from the ones they have and so they try to protect their members from being affected. He took the case of heaven and earth teaching as an example

"For instance, there is nothing like hell fire as propagated in many churches. Hell fire was mentioned just as an illustration by Jesus Christ when He was saying the parable of Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible. According to Etop, members are not literally compelled to marry one another but if they marry outside of the church, the church would not honor such a union or an invitation to the wedding ceremony.

Photo: Man kills roommate during fight over cooking pot in Lagos

A 20 year old man named Ngwuta Nweke has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly killing his roommate, Emeka James, at their apartment at Kadara slum, close to Sawmill, Ebute Metta Lagos during a fight over a cooking pot.

According to a Punch report, the incident happened on the 22nd of March 2014.

While being paraded before pressmen, Nweke said that he never intended to kill his friend. He said as they were fighting, he held James' neck and mistakenly strangled him to death. Continue...

He explains

"On the day of the incident, I had some stew in a pot and James told me to empty the pot because he wanted to make use of it. I told him that I could not pour the stew anywhere and he should be patient, but he got angry. In a fit of rage, he picked up the pot and poured the stew into a dirty container. I also got angry and we started fighting. I grabbed him from behind and as we were struggling, we both fell to the ground. When I got up, I realised that James was no longer breathing.” James was quickly rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide while confirming the incident said;

"On the fateful day, around 12.30pm, Nweke strangled James who lived in an apartment at Kadara slum, close to Sawmill, Ebute Meta, during a fight over a cooking pot. The corpse has been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, while the matter is under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.”

The landlord of the house said;

"I have known James since 2011 when he started living in the house. He was a good person and was very hardworking. He was a hawker, but when the state government began a clamp down of their activities, he started doing other menial jobs. I never knew anyone was living with James. It was when I was invited by the police that I saw the guy (Nweke) for the first time.”
